Sara Cushing has been on the GSU faculty since 1997 and has served in her current role since May 2017. She is Professor of Applied Linguistics and served as Chair of that department from 2008 to 2014. She served on the University Senate for many years, chairing both the Committee on Academic Programs (CAP) and Admissions and Standards. Dr. Cushing holds an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from UCLA and a B.A. in German Studies from Stanford University. She has published research in the areas of assessment, second language writing, and teacher education, and is the author of a widely cited volume on writing assessment (Weigle, S,C., 2002, Assessing Writing, Cambridge University Press). She has been invited to speak and conduct workshops on assessment throughout the world, most recently in Vietnam, Colombia, Thailand, and Japan, and is currently Vice President of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA). She also serves on the Publications Committee of the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (AALHE).
